Why the bank gets paid first

Every month, your interest charge is the rate times your current balance — so early on, when the balance is fattest, most of your payment is interest and barely dents the principal. An extra dollar of principal today doesn't just cut the balance by a dollar; it kills every future interest charge that dollar would have generated for the rest of the loan. That's why small extra payments, started early, erase years — you're not paying faster, you're starving the interest.
